With Rihannas short hair, what is she using to hold down her sides? Is it mousse of some type of dry-look gel?

For thick hair, would gel or mousse work on a 3b natural curl pattern to make sides lay flat? If you look at Rihanna when she had her short hair, you will see that the sides look always sleek,soft and not gunked up with product.... any suggestions?
