CSS image link border help?

I have a setting for my links to be white, and I set the hover to change the background color...to have a highlighted effect...I do not want this effect on my image links...I have removed the borders but when I hover over them, the background color appears as a border...as of now it inherits the properties from my other link styles...is there a way to nullify the properties from the other link selector to not effect my image links?
