Why do people from Southern States embrace the racist legacy of the Civil War?

Folks are naturally proud of their ancestors. A lot more than slavery went into the secession decisions of the southern states and you may be surprised to find out that many blacks fought for the South by their own desire. If you don't like the way we do things down here, stay up north.
