Why did Jesus take the easy way out and die so young?

Word has it that he was approx. 33 when he died. Why not live to be an old man? Wouldn't it server a greater good for him to have been on this earth longer? He could have still "died for our sins" when he was old. Did he just give up? And why do we never really hear about Jesus as a tween or teen? What was he up to then?
